Android TV and Google TV Setup for a Bilingual Canadian Household

The setup, one screen at a time

1. Run a quick readiness check

   Three things decide whether the next ten minutes go smoothly. First, the Google account: open the Play Store and confirm your profile picture shows at the top, because browsing works without an account and installs do not. Second, the connection at the set itself: most Android TV devices show signal strength under Settings, Network and Internet, and a free speed test app from the Play Store gives a real figure. Third, typing: long server addresses are painful on an on-screen keyboard, so either install the Google TV app on your phone and use it as a keyboard, or plug a USB keyboard into a box that has a spare port.

2. Choose and install a player

   Search the Play Store for TiViMate IPTV Player or IPTV Smarters Pro. For a main family-room television TiViMate is the stronger pick, because its grid guide is the easiest to read from the couch. Smarters is the friendlier choice if the same household also uses phones or an Apple device, since it exists on those too. If the store listing for either does not appear on a cheaper box, that box may be running a phone version of Android; the Firestick guide’s Downloader method works on it as well.

3. Enter your Xtream login

   In TiViMate, choose Add playlist and then Xtream Codes login. In Smarters, pick Login with Xtream Codes API. Both then want the same three values: the server address, complete with http:// and its port, your username and your password. Paste them from the Google TV phone app if you can. TiViMate asks you to name the playlist, so use something plain like Maison or Family Room.

4. Let the first sync finish

   The player now downloads the channel list and program guide. On a first run that can take a couple of minutes over Wi-Fi, especially with a line-up of 25,000+ channels, and the guide often fills in after the channels appear. Leave it alone until the progress indicator stops rather than backing out halfway, which is the most common reason a guide shows up half empty.

5. Sort categories with Canadian channels on top

   In TiViMate, open Settings, Playlists, select your playlist and manage its groups: hide the international categories nobody in the house uses, and move the Canadian English and French groups to the top of the list. Then long-press on individual channels to add them to Favourites. In Smarters the category list is on the left of Live TV, and long-pressing a channel adds it to Favourites. A household that splits by language can keep both kinds of channel in Favourites so the language switch is one row down, not ten screens away.

6. Set audio language and the guide clock

   Android TV has two separate clocks to think about. The device clock lives under Settings, System, Date and time; leave automatic time zone on unless the box is showing the wrong one, which happens with imported boxes. Then open a channel whose schedule you know and compare. If the whole grid sits an hour or two off, look for the EPG time offset or time shift option in your player’s settings and adjust by the difference. For audio, press select or the menu button during playback and choose the audio track; where a broadcast carries both French and English, both show up there.

7. Prepare for a cold night on a busy network

   When the temperature drops and everyone is home, the home network is at its most crowded. Wire the TV or box with Ethernet if the router is nearby; the Google TV Streamer and the Nvidia Shield both have a port, and Chromecast with Google TV takes a USB-C Ethernet adapter. In TiViMate or Smarters, keep hardware decoding on. Pick FHD rather than 4K when the family room is one of several screens in use. If playback still stutters at peak hours, restart the router and the TV once, then test a single channel on a phone on the same Wi-Fi to see whether the problem is the whole house or one device.

If a step does not work

The Play Store shows a US country and some apps look different

Google Play follows the country on your Google payments profile, not the TV’s location. If you set up the account while living in the US, the store may still treat you as a US customer. Change it in the Play Store app on your phone, under your profile’s settings in the account and device preferences area. Google only allows a country change about once a year, so make sure it is right when you do it.

The guide is exactly one or two hours wrong

A fixed offset like this means the device or player is using the wrong zone, typically Eastern when you live in Alberta or Pacific when you live in Manitoba. Correct the device first under Settings, System, Date and time, restart the player, and only then use the player’s EPG offset if a gap remains.

French and English tracks will not switch

Open the audio track menu while the channel is playing, not from the channel list. If only one track appears, that particular feed carries a single language and there is nothing to switch; choose the matching channel from the other language group instead. Some players also have a preferred audio language setting, which is worth setting to the language most of the house uses.
