Hockey and Every Other Sport on SMARTIFLIX, Coast to Coast

A game that starts at seven in the evening in Toronto starts at half past eight in St. John's and at four in the afternoon in Vancouver. Following sport in Canada means doing that conversion all season, and it is the reason this page starts with timing rather than a list of logos. The competitions below are those carried in the line-up. Hockey is at the top because this page is written for viewers in Canada, followed by the World Cup and the big American leagues, then European football, Formula 1, combat sports and the rest.

Having the right channel is only half the job. The other half is being on it with a steady picture when the game starts, which is the moment everyone else turns on the same broadcast. The table shows where to look. The sections after it cover the clock and the connection.

One game, six time zones

Canada spans six time zones: Pacific, Mountain, Central, Eastern, Atlantic and Newfoundland, which sits half an hour ahead of Atlantic time. Most of Saskatchewan also stays on the same clock all year while its neighbours move theirs forward and back, so a game can shift by an hour against local time in spring and autumn even though nothing changed on the broadcaster's side.

The guide in your player takes care of most of this, but only if the device knows where it is. Listings data arrives with its own time reference, and the player converts it to the time zone set on the TV box, stick or phone. A Firestick set up by a relative in Ontario and brought to Alberta will keep showing Eastern times until someone changes it. When every listing is out by exactly the same amount, the fix is almost always the device's date and time settings, not the service.

For games that start early for western viewers, such as Saturday matinées or European football mornings, add the channel to your favourites the evening before. A few minutes spent the night before saves searching a long list while the opening minutes play.

Before the puck drops: a short routine

2. Build a hockey group. Put NHL Network, the TSN channels and each Sportsnet feed in one favourites group so you are not scrolling through 25,000+ channels while the anthem plays.
3. Take the box off Wi-Fi if you can. Many Canadian homes have the modem in the basement, two floors below the TV. An Ethernet cable, or a coax or powerline adapter that uses the wiring already in your walls, is steadier than Wi-Fi through floors.
4. Know where the backup is. Each big sports channel has lower-quality copies in HD and SD listed right beside its 4K version. Switching takes a couple of seconds, which is far better than watching a spinning wheel through a power play.
5. Tune in a few minutes early. Opening the channel before the start means any sign-in or loading happens during the pre-game show, not the opening faceoff.

Beyond the rink

Football fans will find CBS, FOX, NBC, ESPN, NFL Network and RedZone in the table. For soccer, TSN appears alongside FOX, Telemundo, BBC, ITV and beIN for the World Cup and the Euros, while the Premier League and the Champions League come through the British and American sports channels. Formula 1, UFC and boxing cards, college sport, golf, tennis, rugby and cricket fill the rest. The 4K column shows which competitions have Ultra HD feeds; where a sport says some games, expect 4K on selected broadcasts rather than every one.
