Gather these first
- A Fire TV Stick, Fire TV Cube or Fire TV smart TV running Fire OS
- Your SMARTIFLIX server URL (with its port), username and password, open on your phone
- A speed reading taken beside the TV the stick is plugged into, not beside the router
- The Fire TV remote, or the Amazon Fire TV phone app if you would rather type on a phone keyboard

The setup, one screen at a time
Do a readiness check at that TV
Before installing anything, find out what the stick is working with. Open Settings, My Fire TV, About to confirm the model: anything on Fire OS is fine, but the Fire TV Stick 4K Select runs Amazon’s newer Vega OS and will not install Android players, so stop here if that is yours. Next, run a speed test from the stick’s position. A phone held at the TV gives a fair idea, and once Downloader is installed its browser can load a test page. If a rec-room TV reads well below what the router shows upstairs, plan on the Amazon Ethernet adapter or a mesh node before you blame anything else. Finally, have your activation message open so the long server address can be read, not remembered.
Turn on developer options
Go to Settings, then My Fire TV. If Developer Options is not listed, open About, highlight the device name and press select seven times until a message says you are now a developer. Go back one screen and Developer Options appears. Inside it you will see either Install unknown apps, which works per app, or on older sticks a single Apps from Unknown Sources switch. Leave this screen open in your mind; you come back to it in a minute.
Install Downloader and allow it
From the home screen, use search and type Downloader. The correct one has an orange icon and is published by AFTVnews. Install it, then return to Developer Options, Install unknown apps and switch Downloader on. Open Downloader once and accept its request for access to files, because refusing that prompt makes the next download fail with no useful message.
Fetch the player
In Downloader, select the address field on the Home tab and enter the link our support team gives you for IPTV Smarters Pro, or the developer’s published APK address. Press Go. When the file finishes, the Android installer opens: choose Install, then Done, then Delete to remove the leftover file. Sticks have little storage, and old installers quietly eat it.
Sign in with your Xtream details
New apps do not land on the main row. Press the apps button, the icon of three squares with a plus, find IPTV Smarters Pro, press the menu button on the remote and choose Move to bring it forward. Open it, accept the terms and pick Login with Xtream Codes API. Call the profile something useful, such as Rec Room or Cottage, then enter the username, password and server URL including http:// and the port. Press Add User and give the first sync a minute or two to pull channels and guide data.
Put Canadian channels first
Open Live TV and look through the category list for the Canadian groups rather than scrolling the full line-up. Hold select on the channels you actually watch, from hockey nights to your local evening news, to add them to Favourites. In a bilingual house it helps to favourite the English and French versions of the same kind of channel side by side, so nobody has to hunt. A tight favourites list of a few dozen channels turns a list of 25,000+ into something the whole family can use.
Match the guide to your province
The guide is only useful if 7 p.m. on screen means 7 p.m. where you are. First check the stick itself under Settings, Preferences, Date and Time, and pick your zone: Pacific in BC, Mountain in Alberta, Central in Manitoba, Eastern for most of Ontario and Quebec, Atlantic in the Maritimes, Newfoundland for Newfoundland. Then open a channel you know the schedule for. If the grid is still off by a fixed amount, look in the Smarters settings for the EPG time shift option and correct it there. Newfoundland’s half-hour offset is the one most likely to need that manual nudge.
Tune for a cold night and a busy network
The worst test comes on a frigid weeknight when the kids are gaming, someone is on a video call and the game starts at 7. In Smarters, open Settings, Player settings and choose hardware decoding. If the stick is on Wi-Fi, make sure it is joined to the 5 GHz network name if your router offers one, since that band is faster over short to medium distances. When a channel carries 4K and FHD versions, use FHD downstairs; the difference on a smaller rec-room set is minor and the saving in headroom is not. A restart from Settings, My Fire TV, Restart once a week clears the memory a stick slowly loses to background apps.
If a step does not work
The picture freezes every few minutes on the basement TV
This is almost always signal strength, not the account. Floors, ductwork and a furnace between router and stick weaken Wi-Fi far more than distance alone. Test on a TV upstairs with the same login: if that plays smoothly, the fix belongs downstairs, in the form of an Ethernet adapter, a mesh node near the stairs or a powerline kit.
The Appstore behaves like a US store on a Canadian stick
If the stick was registered with an Amazon account created on amazon.com, the Appstore follows that country and some listings differ. Sign in to your Amazon account in a browser, open the Content and Devices area, then Preferences and Country/Region settings, and set Canada. Deregistering and re-registering the stick afterwards makes it pick the change up.
Hockey commentary is in French when you wanted English, or the reverse
The Fire TV language menu only changes Amazon’s menus, never the stream. While the channel plays, bring up the player controls in Smarters and open the audio track option; where a feed carries two tracks you can switch there. If only one track is listed, that feed is single-language, so pick the other-language channel from its category instead.
The login is refused straight after typing it
On a remote keyboard it is easy to drop the colon before the port or add a stray capital. Retype the server address using the Fire TV phone app keyboard, check it begins with http:// and ends with the port number, and enter the password exactly as sent, since it is case sensitive.

Firestick: setup questions
Does this work on the Fire TV Stick 4K Select?
No. That model runs Vega OS instead of the Android-based Fire OS, so Downloader and Android players cannot be installed on it. Any Fire OS stick, Cube or Fire TV edition television follows this guide normally. If you already own a 4K Select, use a smart TV app or a different streaming device for SMARTIFLIX.
Is a Fire TV Stick good enough for a cottage connection?
Usually, as long as you are realistic about quality. On a slower rural or satellite link, pick HD versions of channels over 4K, keep the stick close to the router, and avoid downloading big updates on the same connection while the game is on. The stick is rarely the bottleneck; the line to the cottage is.
Can the rec-room stick and the living-room TV share one login?
Yes, install and sign in on as many devices as you like. What your plan limits is how many play at the same moment, so check your plan’s simultaneous-stream allowance before two people start watching at once.
Should I use IPTV Smarters Pro or TiViMate on the stick?
Both are sideloaded the same way and take the same Xtream details. Smarters is free and easy to learn. TiViMate has a stronger grid guide, and its recording and multi-view features sit behind a paid upgrade. Many households start with Smarters and switch once they rely on the guide.
