IPTV Player Apps for the Screens Found in Canadian Homes

For most Canadian homes, the best IPTV app is TiViMate on a Fire TV Stick, Google TV or Android TV device, IPTV Smarters Pro where TiViMate is not available, and IBO Player or Smart IPTV on Samsung and LG televisions. Apple TV owners and Roku households have narrower choices, which we cover honestly below. The right answer for your house depends less on which app is “best” in the abstract and more on the screens you already own and who in the family will be holding the remote.

The player is not the service

This point trips up more people than any other, so it comes first. An IPTV player app contains no channels. It is an empty shell, a bit like a web browser, that becomes useful only when you log into a service with it.

Your subscription gives you login details, and the app uses them to fetch everything else. SMARTIFLIX accounts come as a standard Xtream Codes login, which means three values:

• a server URL,
• a username,
• a password.

You also receive an M3U link, a single web address that bundles the same information, for players that prefer it. Almost every modern player accepts one or the other, and the Xtream login is usually the better choice because it loads the programme guide, catch-up and on-demand library automatically. Switching player later costs nothing: the same login works in any of them.

Because the apps are made by independent developers, they also come with their own pricing, updates and quirks, entirely separate from your subscription. That is why this article exists.

Seven players worth knowing

TiViMate

Runs on: Android TV, Google TV and Fire TV devices, including the Fire TV Stick, Google TV Streamer, Nvidia Shield, and TVs with Google TV built in from brands such as Sony, TCL and Hisense.

TiViMate looks and behaves like the guide on a cable box, which is exactly why families switching from cable settle into it quickly. The grid guide is fast, favourites and channel groups are easy to organize, and it handles several playlists at once. The free version plays channels; the premium upgrade, sold as a subscription or a one-time purchase inside the app, unlocks features such as recording, catch-up, multi-view and custom groups. For a hockey household on an Android-based device, the premium version is the setup we recommend most often.

IPTV Smarters Pro

Runs on: Android phones, tablets and TV devices, Fire TV, Windows and Mac, with versions for Apple devices whose name and availability on the App Store have changed over time.

Smarters is the generalist. Its interface uses large tiles for Live TV, Movies and Series, which suits relatives who find a grid guide intimidating, and it exists on more platforms than most. It is a sensible default for a house with a mix of Android and computer screens. The trade-off is that its live-TV guide is less refined than TiViMate’s. See our IPTV Smarters Pro setup guide.

IBO Player

Runs on: Samsung and LG smart TVs, Android devices and several other platforms.

IBO Player is one of the more common choices for people who want to use the TV’s built-in apps rather than add a stick. It usually offers a trial period, after which the developer charges an activation fee per device. Setup normally means visiting the developer’s site on a phone or computer and linking your login to the identifier the app displays on the TV.

Smart IPTV

Runs on: Samsung and LG smart TVs and some Android devices.

Smart IPTV is one of the oldest TV-based players. After a free trial period it requires a one-time activation fee tied to the TV’s MAC address, and playlists are uploaded through the developer’s website rather than typed in with the remote. It works with an M3U link rather than an Xtream login. It is dependable but basic, and often the only realistic option on an older smart TV. See our Smart IPTV setup guide.

Apple TV players: iPlayTV and UHF

Run on: Apple TV, and in UHF’s case iPhone and iPad as well.

Apple’s App Store has no TiViMate, and the choice of well-maintained players is smaller than on Android. iPlayTV is a paid app with a clean guide designed for the Apple TV remote. UHF supports Xtream logins and a guide across Apple devices, with some features behind an in-app purchase. Both run smoothly on a recent Apple TV 4K. MYTVOnline on Formuler, and the MAG portal

Formuler boxes run their own player, MYTVOnline 3, which is built into the device and designed for IPTV from the ground up. MAG boxes from Infomir use a built-in portal: instead of typing a username, the provider links the service to the box’s MAC address, and channels appear when the box starts. VLC and Kodi

VLC plays an M3U link on almost anything, including computers, phones and many TV devices. It is excellent for a quick test and poor for daily viewing, because it has no real programme guide. Kodi, with the PVR IPTV Simple Client add-on, can show a full guide, but setting it up takes patience and it is best left to the household member who enjoys tinkering. Which app on which screen

A word about Roku

Roku devices are very common in Canadian living rooms, and they are the least suited to IPTV. Roku does not allow installing apps from outside its store, and IPTV players listed there tend to appear and disappear. Where one is available it can work; where it is not, screen mirroring from a phone or computer is the fallback. If IPTV will be the main use of that TV, a Fire TV Stick or Google TV device plugged into a spare HDMI port is the more reliable answer. Our Roku guide covers both routes.

And the box from your internet company

The TV receiver rented from a Canadian cable or internet company runs that company’s own software, and in general you cannot install third-party apps on it. Use a smart TV app or a separate stick instead.

App stores, regions and where to download from

Which apps you see depends on the country your store account is registered in. A Google account set to Canada shows the Canadian Google Play catalogue; an Apple ID registered in Canada shows the Canadian App Store; Samsung and LG TVs show the store for the region the TV is set to. Most of the players above are available to Canadian accounts, but availability can differ between countries and change without notice, so if an app from a guide written elsewhere does not appear, that is usually why.

Some practical rules:

• Install from the official store whenever the app is there. You get updates automatically and a copy you can trust.
• On Fire TV, sideloading is sometimes needed for players that are not in the Amazon Appstore. The usual method is the Downloader app from Amazon’s own store, with “install unknown apps” enabled only for that app. Only download from the developer’s official source.
• Avoid “modded” or “cracked” versions of paid players shared on forums. They can contain unwanted code, they do not update, and they deny the developer the small fee that keeps the app maintained.
• Do not change your store country to chase an app. Google limits how often the Play Store country can be changed, and Apple ties the store to your payment method.

Setting up for an English and French household

Bilingual homes, and French-speaking homes anywhere in the country, can make any of these players far more comfortable with a few minutes of setup.

• Interface language. Most players follow the device’s system language. Set the Fire TV, Google TV or Apple TV to French and supported apps will present their menus in French.
• Audio and subtitle tracks. On-demand films often include several audio tracks. Players let you pick the track during playback, and several let you set a preferred language so it is chosen automatically.
• Favourites by person. Create a favourites group with TVA, Radio-Canada, RDS and Noovo for one family member and another with TSN, Sportsnet and CBC for someone else. In TiViMate these can sit at the top of the guide.
• Hide what nobody watches. With 25,000+ channels across dozens of countries, hiding unused country groups turns an overwhelming list into a short, familiar one.

Five annoyances and the setting that fixes each

The guide is an hour off after the clocks change

The guide takes its times from the device’s clock and time zone. Check the date and time settings on the TV device first, not the app. Remember that most of Saskatchewan and all of Yukon do not change their clocks, so a device set to a neighbouring province’s zone will be wrong for half the year. If the device is correct and the guide is still off, look for an EPG time-shift option in the player.

Hockey looks slightly jerky during fast skating

North American broadcasts are produced at 60 Hz-based frame rates, and a TV device outputting a mismatched rate can make smooth motion stutter. On Android-based devices, turn on automatic frame-rate matching, which TiViMate offers in its playback settings and some devices also offer at system level. On Apple TV, enable Match Frame Rate in the video settings.

The guide is empty for some channels

Refresh the EPG from the player’s settings and give it a few minutes to load; a large guide takes time the first day. If only a handful of channels remain blank, those channels may not have guide data, which does not affect playback.

Sound drifts ahead of the picture

Try switching the player’s video decoder between hardware and software modes, and check whether a soundbar or receiver is adding its own delay. Most players and many TVs include an audio delay adjustment.

Buffering on one TV but not another

This is almost always the home network rather than the app. The TV that buffers is usually the one furthest from the router, often in the basement. An Ethernet cable, a MoCA adapter using existing coax wiring, or a mesh node nearby will solve it more reliably than any player setting. You can also lower the stream to HD on that TV.

What the apps cost, in general terms

The subscription pays for the service; the app, where it charges, pays its developer. The patterns are consistent even though exact prices change:

• Free: IPTV Smarters Pro on many platforms, VLC, Kodi and the free tier of TiViMate.
• One-time activation per device: Smart IPTV and IBO Player after their trial periods.
• Optional premium upgrade: TiViMate Premium and in-app upgrades in apps such as UHF.
• Paid upfront: iPlayTV on Apple devices.
• Built in: MYTVOnline 3 on Formuler and the portal on MAG boxes.
